Graduate of the Month, October of 2001

In 1800 Asa Mann, an Englishman from Rhode Island, settled at the northern end of what is now the borough of Mansfield. He was the first to clear any considerable amount of land, about 25 acres. His holdings became known as Mann's Field and hence became Mansfield. He soon divided his cleared land into building lots. He opened a store and a hotel in 1804. Mansfield was incorporated in 1857 and the first official map was drawn. On March 27th, 1857 the first officials were elected. The library was founded in 1901.

An unforgettable family weekend happens in Mansfield every September, known as "The Fabulous 1890's Weekend". This festive weekend revolves around the anniversary of the world's first night football game played under lights on September 28th, 1892. The match pitted Mansfield Seminary against Wyoming Seminary and was the highlight of the Great Mansfield Fair that year. To celebrate this historic event, Mansfield University, the Chamber of Commerce and the entire community join forces to create a colorful family weekend.

In Light of what happened this September 11th to our great Nation, Citizens' would like to honor all the heroes that selflessly sacrificed their lives so others could live. Heroes come in many varieties. They gain national notoriety or remain in obscurity. We want you to meet a hero of the later variety.

Please meet Ms. Saundra Tice. Saundra graduated from Citizens' in May of 2000. Her first choice was not distance education. Saundra had home school thrust upon her due to family circumstances. Saundra became pregnant and was unable to stay in public school. Many young women in this situation find it necessary to drop out of school and give up on their dreams of an education and career. Not so for our hero.

Saundra made a difficult decision to continue her education from home and enrolled with us. She completed her last two years of high school from her kitchen table and earned her diploma with an impressive 3.6 GPA. Saundra wasn't done yet. She wanted to be hero for her son, Bradley.
Ms. Tice is now a student at Mansfield University. She is pursuing a dual degree in Special Education and Elementary Education. Our Nation's teachers are unsung heroes that positively affect the lives of others. We know that Saundra will affect the lives of many, many people. Her goals and grit make her a hero now and a future hero too.
Saundra, because you didn't give up, because you are intent on providing a good life for Bradley, and because you put the needs of others before your own, you are a hero and you are ...
