In Kentucky, Ashland's recorded history begins with the migration of the Scotch-Irish Poage family from the Shenandoah Valley via the famed Cumberland Gap. They settled a homestead on the Ohio River in 1786 by the name of Poage's Landing. It was not until 1854 that Ashland received its modern name when a stockholder in the Kentucky Iron, Coal and Manufacturing Company suggested it be named after the famous statesman Henry Clay's home, Ashland, located in Lexington, KY.

From its roots in iron manufacturing, Ashland has developed as a center of industry in Eastern Kentucky. Today, the Catlettsburg Marathon Oil Refinery (formerly Ashland Oil) and AK Steel (formerly Armco) remain pillars of Ashland's industrial economy. Currently, however, King's Daughters Medical Center is the city's largest employer. Some Well-known residents of Ashland Kentucky have included Naomi and Wynonna Judd.

Another soon-to-be well known resident is our featured graduate. This smiling face belongs to SuAnna Willis. SuAnna graduated from Citizens' High School this past August. Ms. Willis never set foot in a publick high school. She was home schooled and the Citizens' curriculum to earn her diploma. SuAnna chose Citizens' after looking at other schools that offered homeschool curriculums. She discovered we had the best program for the money. SuAnna also discovered that most colleges accept Citizens' diploma for entrance. SuAnna's younger sister is also a Citizen's student. Ms. Willis tells us that she is filled with pride to have completed a goal and earn a high school diploma. "I can't wait to start college." SuAnna is now attending Ashland Community College, focusing on Radiology. Ashland Community & Technical College has been the two-year college of choice for students in the Ashland area for more than 60 years. SuAnna's future hopes include finishing her degree and joining the Red Cross. With a spirit like that, it's hard to overlook her as a special graduate. She has made us proud and brought validity to home schooler's every where. SuAnna is our May 2006 Graduate of the month
