Vesta Minnesota is an extremely small town in Redwood County. According to the 2000 census only339 people lived there. The median age is 34.8 years old. The history of Vesta is largely unknown but the county of Redwood has some interesting facts. Redwood is aptly named for Redwood River. Redwood is the translation of the Dakota name "Chanshayapi”. Prior to the establishment of Redwood on February 6, 1862 some other historical facts occurred.

In 1763 The Treaty of Paris, following the French and Indian War, ceded French territory east of the Mississippi River to England. This included what would eventually become Redwood County and Vesta. President Thomas Jefferson acquired that part of Minnesota lying south and west of the Mississippi River from the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Finally The Convention of 1818 with England put all of Minnesota under the American flag. Minnesota became the thirty-second state on May 11, 1858. At the time of its entry Minnesota was the third largest state in land area, only Texas and California were larger.

Another terrific fact about Vesta is Ms. Karla Paskewitz. Karla just graduated from Citizens High School this past December. She was attending Vesta High before finding Citizens. She was having significant issues with her public high. She discovered that the make-up of her school was very cliquish. She tried to fit in but could not align herself with any of the dominant cliques. The government run school put much too much emphasis on finishing the academic year instead of understanding the academic year. For Karla, group paced instruction was not filling the bill. She needed a curriculum designed to work at her pace, insuring complete comprehension. She found such a curriculum with Citizens’ High School. Her “own pace” allowed Karla to finish 3 academic years in just a little over two years. She did this with great GPA too.

Having earned a fully accredited high school diploma, Karla is now brimming with the strength and confidence to enter the workforce. Her goals include meaningful full time employment for now and her future goals include a husband and family.

Karla has made us all proud here at Citizens’ High School. We are honored to award her Graduate of the Month for January 2006.
